The Rehabilitation Process 🩹

- STEP 1 - CONSULTATION -

Before any sports massage, you will undergo a consultation to understand what are your current limitations to day-to-day activities and/or exercise. This will be used to determine which structures are causing the issue and provide the focus for which areas are to be treated during your sports massage.

- STEP 2 - TREATMENT -

Your treatment will involve techniques such as deep tissue muscle release, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretches (PNF) and other advanced active muscle release techniques.

- STEP 3 - AFTERCARE -

After your treatment, we will also discuss what you should and shouldn't do in the days and weeks following treatment. We will also go over any changes you should make to your training and stretches you should perform safely at home.

Q: What is sports massage?

Sports massage is a type of therapeutic massage designed specifically for athletes or individuals with active lifestyles. It combines deep tissue massage, stretching, and specific techniques to target muscle groups commonly stressed in sports activities. Unlike regular massage, sports massage aims to improve flexibility, reduce the risk of injury, and enhance athletic performance by focusing on muscles under regular strain due to physical activity.

Q: How can sports massage help improve athletic performance?

A: Sports massage enhances athletic performance by increasing blood circulation, improving muscle flexibility, and reducing muscle tightness, which aids in quicker recovery. It also reduces muscle tension and prevents adhesions (knots) that restrict movement. By addressing muscle imbalances and potential injury points, sports massage enables athletes to maintain an optimal range of motion, thereby improving overall performance.

Q: Can sports massage help with injury recovery?

A: Yes, sports massage can significantly aid in injury recovery. By improving circulation to the injured area, it accelerates healing, reduces swelling, and minimizes scar tissue formation. Sports massage also relieves pain and stiffness associated with injuries and promotes a quicker return to regular physical activities. However, it should only be done under professional guidance and after consulting with a healthcare provider.

Q: How often should someone get a sports massage?

A: The frequency of sports massage depends on the individual’s training intensity and personal needs. Generally, athletes in training can benefit from a session every 1-2 weeks, while those in less intense routines may opt for once a month or as needed. Post-event massage is also popular to aid in recovery. Regular sessions, tailored to specific schedules and physical demands, can offer the most benefit.

Q: Is sports massage painful, and how intense is it?

A: Sports massage can be intense and may feel uncomfortable, especially on sore or tight muscles. Unlike relaxation massage, it involves deeper pressure to target muscle knots and adhesions, which may cause mild pain. However, it should not be excessively painful. A skilled therapist will adjust the pressure based on the client’s tolerance, ensuring it remains effective yet manageable.

Q: Can anyone get a sports massage, or are there limitations?

A: Most people can safely receive a sports massage, but there are some limitations. Individuals with certain medical conditions—such as acute injuries, open wounds, blood clotting disorders, or recent surgeries—should avoid sports massage or consult with a healthcare provider first. Pregnant women, individuals with chronic conditions, and those on blood-thinning medications should also seek advice before booking a session.
